Climate Resilient Demonstration Garden
Introducing the newest addition to the Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation, the Climate Resilient Demonstration Garden!
This project was developed to help folks on PEI understand how to adapt to changing climate conditions by demonstrating small scale sustainable, climate-smart gardening techniques suitable for PEI.
The project is supported by the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, the Government of PEI, and the Government of Canada.

Installing the garden
It was a busy summer at the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation. Planning for the Climate Resilient Demonstration Garden began in June 2025, starting with reaching out to a local wood mill to order some freshly milled larch boards to build the raised bed frames. Larch is naturally durable and rot resistant, more affordable than cedar boards, and local!

Soil and seafood compost was provided by Lawns and Beyond. The seafood compost should add some excellent nutrients to our fairly sandy soil on PEI. The organic content of PEI soil is fairly low, so adding rich compost will help growing plants find the nutrients they needs AND hold on to water during drier times.

As with all exciting projects, there were some unexpected delays. Construction on an amphitheater began mid-summer so we had to hold off on installing and filling the beds until that wrapped up at the end of August. Though it meant we didn't get to grow things this year, we are super excited to now have an amazing outdoor classroom for garden workshops and events!
